Goals of Introduction to Writing SOPHOMORE WRITINGCOURSE INTRODUCTION(created by Mr. Gehrman) WELCOME TO WRITING CLASS!
I hope you can gain some insight into how to put together a composition or essay in this class. The skills you learn in this class should help you with all academic writing you do in the future, and may help you beyond the classroom as well. A few introductory comments before we get going…
WRITING IS A PROCESS, NOT A HEROIC FEAT. You do not just go onto a field and complete in a varsity event; you practice beforehand. Writing is the same way. If you just put something together the night before it is due, you are asking for trouble. You need to practice by writing drafts, and get some coaching from classmates and you teacher. With that in mind…
ANYONE CAN BE A GOOD WRITER! Although everyone’s talents are different, writing is not a matter of “you either have it or you do not”. As long as you keep up with the work and listen to your coaches, you can succeed. So now on to the…
GOALS OF THE COURSE. By the time you leave this course, it is my hope you will be able to:
Develop your ideas completely. In fact, I am more impressed with a limited number of ideas developed completely than a large number of ideas presented without much detail.
Write good paragraphs that deal with a single central idea and stick to that idea.
Create good compositions and essays, where you come up with a complex idea that requires you to logically organize your points over the course of a number of paragraphs.
Consider your audience in every piece of writing you do. Most things you write are not for your own benefit. You are trying to communicate something to someone else. You should know your audience for a piece of writing and consider them when you choose things like what to include in the piece and the vocabulary you use.
Be a good coach or consultant. It is one thing to write well; it is another to be able to recognize strengths and needs in someone else’s writing. A master writer is able to do both.
